Colour Popping

This is an interesting shop, it’s in Cheshire Street, Spitalfields. As you can see from the sign, if you need new plimsoles this is the shop for you. It’s a seriously great shop with loads of bargains. I came across it one very overcast November day as I was wandering the streets looking for material. There was a very odd sort of light that day, completely flat almost as if all the colour had been sucked out of it. I immediately thought of a black and white image. However as I was changing lenses a guy arrived on this bright red scooter. I immediately shot the picture to include the scooter but I was still thinking in terms of black and white.

It was only when I sat at my Mac changing the picture to black and white that it occurred to me ‘colour popping’ might work on this particular image. I am so glad I tried it, I don’t do it very often but I think when it works it really works. It gave me a finished image that reflected what I saw that day, dull, overcast light but with that bright scooter.

Technical info: Nikon D80 camera, handheld, in Aperture priority mode with a F2.8 28/70mm Nikon zoom lens. The shutter speed was 1/50th of a second with an aperture of f4.5. The ISO was 200.
